It’s hard to think of a more appropriate launch event for The Kevin Steeds Lymphoma Fund than a quiz night - Kevin loved a good quiz. That’s why on 28 November 2009, 180 friends and family braved the torrential rain to come to Tetherdown School Hall to pitch their wits, have a laugh, raise money and, of course, to remember Kevin.
Susan welcomed us all warmly and spoke movingly about what had motivated the family to set up the KSLF. She also showed us the beautiful and symbolic KSLF Christmas card, designed by friend and local illustrator, Jane Ray. It was a poignant moment of reflection before she handed over to Brian Cathcart and Neil Swan, our sparkle-suited Quiz Masters….
Brian and Neil did us proud. Hard to imagine, but their wit outshone those glittery outfits. No amount of mugging up beforehand could have prepared us for the challenges that followed. Each round was named after a famous person, starting with a picture game where we tried to name twenty celebrities by looking at photos of dismembered bits of their faces (this was called the ‘Peter Andre round’ for, as Neil said, he’s only a bit of a celebrity…)
Each round was Kevin-inspired. ‘Horatio Nelson’ had us identifying famous buildings and was reminiscent of how Kevin’s wonderful Treasure Hunts drew our attention to the detail around us that we too often ignore. ‘Nicola Horlick’ reflected Kevin’s business acumen while ‘Don Draper’ tested our recall of ads in homage to Kevin’s years in marketing and advertising. ‘Florence Griffith Joyner’ because there HAD to be a sports round, ‘Justin Lee Collins’ – who hails from Bristol - reminded us of Kevin’s Bristolian roots and ‘Dean Martin’ had us guessing the origin of alcoholic drinks…after all, Kevin was not unfamiliar with a drink or two..
Halfway through we took a break, swapped notes with friends on other tables, and ate the delicious curry supper prepared by an excellent local restaurant, A Taste of Nawab. We also grappled with the second picture round ominously named ‘Bob Crow’. The task was to identify twenty tube stations on a blank London underground map – Kevin loathed the tube, especially the Northern line - but more than one table gained full marks on this!
While the scores were counted by Brian and Neil’s lovely assistant, David Pelly, the entrepreneurial Steeds children, Aimee, James and Tara, treated us to a final game. Heads and Tails brought us all to our feet, second guessing James’ toss of the coin by clutching, yes, you guessed it, our heads, or our tails. It was a last minute bit of fun with a purpose raising an extra £180 as we all paid £1 to enter.
The evening perfectly captured Kevin’s warmth and camaraderie, his fiercely competitive spirit, his love of a job well done and, most of all, his sheer sense of fun. It also raised £3,750 for this worthy cause. As the specially commissioned KSLF mugs awarded to the winning team declared, ‘it’s not about the taking part, it’s about the winning…’ Kevin would surely have agreed.
