Event: Ellie Temple's GREAT NORTH RUN challenge

Date: 16th September 2012
Amount Raised: £270

"Last year, my friend Ellie Temple ran the great North Run for the MS Society in memory of her Aunt. This year she took on the challenge again for the KSLF. I don't why she did this .... who would want to run a half marathon especially when you're asthmatic! Ellie got on well with my Dad, and called him "Grumpy"... to his face which is probably why she did the half marathon and I did not!"

Event: HUW HENESSEY'S CYCLE CHALLENGE
Date: 24th June 2012
Amount Raised:£397

"Well, I did it. In just under 9 hours in fact, so a bit quicker than last year, I think, maybe down to the weather. It started grey and drizzly, but by the time we got up to Exmoor it was all blue skies, fluffy white clouds and a light refreshing breeze. Along with - or mostly behind - 1100 other cyclists all clad in dayglo lycra, with pumped up thighs and razor-thin bicycles (giving me serious bike envy, unfavourably comparing my ancient secondhand pink Raleigh). We followed a meandering route by the banks of the River Exe, all turbulent and swollen from recent rains, through shady woods and lush meadows. Finally up onto Exmoor, between Dulverton and South Molton; stunning scenery and with the toughest hills thoughtfully concentrated in the earlier stages of the ride.
High points: The Finish line, obviously. Plus my greedy devouring of about a dozen cakes and flapjacks, egg and tuna rolls, sausages, bananas, crisps and gallons of hot tea and lemonade. Sort of like an extreme Enid Blyton adventure. Low points: those hills, which always seemed to have one more climb around the corner, just when I thought I'd reached the peak. And a notice at the top of the relentlessly horrible Dulverton Hill, saying "Only 19 miles to the next drinks station!" Which was an evil fib as it was just over a mile away - or maybe I was hallucinating by then. Favourite sign: a hand-painted poster between South Molton and Morchard Road, saying "Come on, Baldie! Less hair = more speed". Can't argue with that."
